What is it that inspires a chef to develop a menu with off-the-wall offerings like a Ramen Teriyaki Burger and Chicken and Waffles Ramen?
“My lack of knowledge of Ramen,” chuckles chef Howie Haywood. “That’s what it is, to be quite frank.”
Throughout March, Haywood and Olde Magoun’s Saloon are celebrating “Rockin’ Ramen Wednesdays” with inventive options that even include dessert noodles—Salted Caramel Ramen Cake with house-made ginger ice cream, anyone?
Haywood says he mostly developed the recipes by sticking to things he already knew and loved—hence the chicken and waffles—but some of the more traditional fusion-style dishes let the chef cook to his strengths while tapping into a current food movement. (His personal favorite? The Ramen and Pork Belly Stir Fry.)
“It’s something that we haven’t done before,” Haywood says. “It’s fun. I like the challenge … it forces me to be creative.”
