It seems like more of our neighbors are ditching their cars during the warmer months, because Davis Square is getting its second Hubway bike rental terminal.
Last Thursday, The Somerville’s Traffic Commission approved the proposal to install an additional bike-sharing station in the island parking lot adjacent to the Rosebud Bar and Grill (381 Summer St.).
Traffic commission also reviewed the plan to move a terminal in Ball Square from the area in front of True Grounds coffee shop to two parking spaces on Bristol Road.
Hubway, the city’s only bike-sharing system, installed a terminal near the MBTA station on the community path and Ball Square last pedal-riding season. Other Somerville locations on Hubway’s map include Powder House Square, Ball Square, and Wilson Square, Conway Park at Somerville Avenue, City Hall, Union Square, and Beacon Street at Washington Street.
Moreover, Hubway posted a report on their website that 13 percent of Hubway riders replaced drivers in the Greater Boston area. Because Davis is such a densely populated community, it’s only natural that the neighborhood would need more than one station to accomodate all the pedalers.
As more automobile operators switch to the two-wheeled, wind-absorbing form of transportation, expect to see more Hubway terminals in your neighborhood. -Angeline Vo
