The legendary Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, one of the longest running large jazz ensembles in the world, will make its debut in the Nave Music Series on Saturday, June 28 at 8 pm. The band will perform originals by founder and music director Mark Harvey (“give this groundbreaking music a listen” Jazz Now), including the world premiere of a piece by Harvey in honor of Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone. Also on tap: Harvey’s 2014 composition Spaceways, celebrating the Sun Ra Centennial. Rounding out the show: rarely-heard gems by Gerry Mulligan (A Ballad) and Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn (the infectious Blue Pepper from the exotic Far East Suite), plus Roll ‘Em, the exuberant Swing-era masterpiece by Mary Lou Williams.
Somerville flutist Peter H. Bloom has performed with Aardvark for more than 35 years. The band is managed by Somerville’s Americas Musicworks (Rebecca DeLamotte, director).
With global distribution of 11 CDs and wide-ranging performances in festivals, clubs, concert halls, colleges and universities, The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra has been a force in the international jazz scene for 40 years. The band has premiered more than 150 works for jazz orchestra. Guest artists who have appeared with Aardvark include jazz luminaries Jaki Byard, Sheila Jordan, Jimmy Giuffre, Geri Allen, Lewis Porter, Vinny Golia, Dominique Eade, Jay Clayton, Paul Lovens, Rajesh Mehta, Matt Savage and Walter Thompson.
