There is currently no permanent health inspector for the city of Somerville. The Inspectional Services Department (ISD) has been advertising to fill two Senior Code Enforcement Officer positions since Oct. 15, according to the city’s Deputy Director of Communications, Jaclyn Rossetti.
The role of the aforementioned officers is primarily to perform food-related inspections. Rossetti provided Scout with this statement regarding the vacancies:
While the positions are in the process of being filled, we have contracted with a Health Inspections company that will perform routine inspections along with plan reviews and other food related inspections on an as needed basis. The current Inspectional Services Deputy Director has all related certifications, training and experience to provide guidance and perform necessary tasks in an emergency situation.
The current deputy director is Ade Solarin MPH, SI, SE, MCPPO.
The independent contractor providing food-related reviews and inspections is MoJin Solutions, LLC. The Westford, MA based company advertises on its website that its staff of public health professionals can assist with staff training, food establishment inspections and plan reviews, among other services.
According to Rossetti, businesses waiting on a health inspection to open will be tended to once representatives from Mojin Solutions, LLC are integrated into the city’s system.
“Other than a minor delay getting the contractor set up to use the City systems there should be no noticeable effect on businesses,” she said in an email.
In 2012, Scout reported on long-term internal issues within the ISD, which included a former department head repeatedly failing certification tests. Read more here.
