Ever wanted to set up your single friend? How about trying it with a PowerPoint presentation?
DateMyFriend.ppt will give people the chance to find their friends a match ahead of Valentine’s Day with a Feb. 7 event at Aeronaut Brewing Company. Twenty pre-selected participants will each give a PowerPoint presentation on why their single friend is awesome, and then the friend will do a Q&A with the audience.
Hosts/organizers Jackie Li and Nancy Zhang both work at startups, so they liked the concept of pitching your friend.
“We thought it would be fun to think about your friend as a unicorn startup,” Li, a Cambridge resident, says.
Zhang and Li winnowed the pool down from hundreds of applications from local residents, making sure to craft a diverse lineup of people. “We welcome and encourage pitches about people of any sexual orientation, and ensure that the final lineup will not solely consist of heterosexual pitches,” they write on the event’s Facebook page.
While the DateMyFriend.ppt format is far from conventional, Li sees it as a return to “real life” dating compared to online dating.
“But mostly it’s just fun to go on stage and talk about how wonderful your friend is,” she says.
The event will start at 6 p.m. on Feb. 7, and is free to attend. But organizers recommend arriving early, as over 1,000 people have RSVP’d “going” on the Facebook page.
DateMyFriend.ppt is modeled after a similar event that’s been hosted in San Francisco, according to Li, but Aeronaut will be its first Boston-area iteration. Li says she and Zhang are interested in organizing DateMyFriend.ppt again if the Feb. 7 debut goes well.
