Managing Editor

Who We Are:

We’re Scout. Usually, we publish two hyperlocal, bi-monthly print magazines—Scout Cambridge and Scout Somerville—with a distribution of 60,000 copies and two websites.

Right now, we’re waiting out the social distancing guidelines by posting local stories online daily across our two websites, planning virtual events, and communicating with readers on social media.

We’re constantly on the ground in our community looking for interesting news stories, cool new businesses, and awesome individuals who deserve a shoutout. And we’re hiring.

What We Need:

Scout is looking for a highly motivated, independent candidate to serve as our Managing Editor. This individual will be responsible for a lot—from overseeing our team of freelancers to coordinating with our photographers and art director to dreaming up, assigning, and writing stories for print and web. They will also oversee our social media channels.

This position is a great chance for an undiscovered, young rockstar to gain invaluable experience.

We’ll be reviewing applications and contacting candidates on a rolling basis, but aim to move quickly, so if you’re interested, apply quickly.

With the publication going from print-first to digital-first as a result of the pandemic, there is a bit of restructuring of this role going on. We are looking for someone organized who will be able to help us through this time.

Who You Are:

You’re clever, organized and efficient. “Self-starter” is a job description cliche, but that really is the type of person we’re looking for. We’re a small team, and we need someone who’s comfortable taking charge, coming up with great ideas and owning this role. You should be a strong writer and a master at meeting deadlines. We’re looking for someone who’s comfortable balancing multiple projects, who isn’t afraid of meeting new challenges head on, and who has a proven record of doing this in previous positions.

Must have:

-Undergraduate degree in journalism or equivalent
-Minimum two years experience in a writing or editing role
-Experience with a variety of social media platforms
-WordPress proficiency
-Outstanding communication skills
-Exceptional organizational skills
-Familiarity with Cambridge and Somerville

Would be a plus:

-Knowledge of InDesign
-Video production/editing experience

We’re open to structures where two people would share these responsibilities, so if you think you’d excel at some of these tasks more than others, still feel free to apply.
