Somerville police officer Louis Remigio died on Monday night after a motor vehicle crash on I-95, according to the department.
The crash happened on Sunday in North Hampton, N.H., police said. Remigio was off-duty at the time, according to city spokeswoman Jaclyn Rossetti.
Remigio had been with the Somerville police since 1988 and was working in the traffic unit. He had received several honors over his time with the department including two Life Saving awards and a Meritorious Service award.
Chief of Police David Fallon and Mayor Joseph Curtatone said in a statement that the crash was “completely avoidable.”
“Officer Remigio was not only one of the most dedicated officers, but he was a well-respected and well-loved member of our city … His loss will be immeasurable in the Somerville Police Department, and today we grieve as a community for Officer Remigio, for his family, and for his brothers and sisters in the Somerville Police Department,” Curtatone said in the statement.
