The days are getting shorter, the kids are back in school and Labor Day is behind us—we’re sorry to say it, folks, but summer 2015 is winding down (even if Mother Nature doesn’t seem to think so). Luckily, you still have a few remaining chances to get out in the sun and pretend that autumn isn’t on the horizon. This Saturday, September 12, Riverfest is bringing mid-summer vibes to the late-summer season at Assembly Row.
“It’s a great opportunity for families in the area to see great local music and great local art,” Assembly Row General Manager and Vice President Matt Ehrie says of the festival, adding that he plans to bring his own kids to the day-long event. “It’s really a family day for us.”
Now in its eighth year, Riverfest actually predates the construction of Assembly Row. Federal Realty began hosting the event after purchasing the Assembly Square marketplace nearly a decade ago. The festivities take place in the recently redesigned, family-friendly Baxter Waterfront Park, but in years past the event was held in the streets or in a smaller corner of the now-beautiful space. “One year there was basically a big dirt pile behind us,” recalls Sarah Campbell, marketing manager at Federal Realty. “The event has really evolved into what it is today.”
The fun kicks off with a sidewalk sale at 10 a.m., and the live music gets going at noon. Ehrie isn’t kidding about this being a family affair, either; with face painting, a bounce house, crafts and a balloon artist, there are more than enough fun activities on deck to keep your kids engaged throughout the afternoon.
And who says it has to be the Fourth of July to enjoy fireworks? At 8 p.m., you can catch a phenomenal pyrotechnic display over the Mystic. (“The fireworks are a must-see,” Ehrie says.)
