“Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.”
For nearly 30 years, Relay for Life’s four word slogan has been a rallying cry for all those working to combat cancer. And on Friday, June 5, Relay returns to Hormel Stadium in Medford, where survivors and supporters will gather around that slogan to raise money for The American Cancer Society.
“Some people have called it a party with a purpose,” says organizer Kayla Hindle. “There’s a lot of fun and entertainment aspects associated with it … but we try to balance that with the fact that a lot of people see Relay as a safe space for them to connect with other people who have had similar experiences.”
That purposeful part also refers to the fundraising component of the campaign. “I think you could add up all the years and it would add up to over half a million dollars,” says Hindle. “The event can have a tremendous impact.”
That money goes into everything from education to patient services to research and supports programs like Road to Recovery, a volunteer program that provides patients with a reliable ride to their treatment.
This year, more than 120 Medford and Somerville participants have already raised $41,525.64 for the American Cancer Society—but with a goal of $100,000 in donations, they still have a long way to go. Luckily, those who are interested in helping don’t have to do so by Friday’s event. Donations will stay open through the end of August.
And whether you’ve participated in Relay for Life in the past or are hearing about the fundraiser for the first time, all are welcome to attend.
“We really encourage anyone and everyone to join us,” Hindle says.
Relay for Life of Medford Somerville will take place on Friday, June 5 from 6 p.m. until midnight at Hormel Stadium in Medford. You can sign up or donate here, and learn more about the event on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
