A trash pickup truck fell into a sinkhole in Union Square around 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28. The truck was backing up to a dumpster when it fell into a large hole in the road near Dunkin’ Donuts. It has since been removed from the area.
The sinkhole appears to be about 6-8 feet deep and about 6-8 feet in diameter as well. The affected section of Newton Street, just before it intersects with Prospect Street, has been blocked off with police tape.
A police officer at the scene says the sinkhole may be attributed to heavy flooding in the area within the past several years, although an exact cause has yet to be determined. A video of the truck in the sinkhole was posted to the Union Square Main Streets Facebook page around noon.
In response to a picture of the hole on our Facebook page, one user asks, “Is this a tunnel for the new greenline extension?” Our answer? We hope not.
