WHAT’S NEW?: Pennypackers rolls into Magoun

114300678One of Boston’s fave food trucks is coming to a storefront location near you: following initial proposals, Pennypackers Fine Foods has been approved to open a brick and mortar space in Magoun Square. According to its Facebook page here, the upscale fast food joint will join Caprese Pizza, the K2 Market, and the under-construction King of Wings at 514 Medford St. later this summer.

Pennypackers currently has two trucks in the Boston area and will bring some of its staple menu items to the new restaurant, including its soups and signature Porchetta sandwich. The business has seen its fan base has grown thanks to a rotating menu which includes the Mexican-inspired Taco Tuesday. On May 4, Pennypackers beat out eight contenders for the first place title in Boston’s Food Truck Throwdown.

The business’s brick and mortar location will fit in well in the growing Magoun Square and offer longer hours than its food trucks: it will keep Somerville fed from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Neighboring businesses can look forward to seeing one less vacant window on the busy street.

Pennypackers is just the latest food truck to announce a brick and mortar storefront, following similar plans by Roxy’s Grilled Cheese and Mei Mei Street Kitchen.

In other news, the team behind Cambridge hotspot Oleana is opening a new restaurant in Somerville. Chef and owner Ana Sortun is pairing up with chef de cuisine Cassie Piuma to open Sarma, a mezze-inspired restaurant that is expected to open this June in the space formerly dedicated to the Paddock. –Jake Reed
