What’s New?: Stop & Shop opens this weekend

stopandshopTeele Square’s new Stop & Shop (which we previewed here in a What’s New? feature earlier this month) will open this Friday, June 21, with exclusive deals and activities. Somerville’s second Stop & Shop opens the doors to its new location at 105 Alewife Brook Parkway (former home of Johnnie’s Foodmaster) at 7 a.m.

Reactions to the new store have been mixed, with some anticipating a lack of the personal connection that Johnnie’s managers had with locals, while others commend Stop & Shop for its additional services, like a Citizen’s Bank inside the store.

Opening weekend will commence with a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Joe Curtatone and the store’s manager, Rich Nolan, at 10 a.m. Friday. (A few Scout staffers will be there too – scout us out and say hi!). Kids can stop n hop with Silly Sally the Clown from Noon – 2 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Silly Sally will be on site painting faces, blowing balloon animals and even putting on puppet shows for your youngsters.

Stop & Shop’s Brand Patrol will award $1000 in the form of $10 gift cards to patrons who purchase Stop n Shop or Nature’s Promise brand products from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Talk about a bang for your buck.

Other features, such as self-checkout registers and a deli kiosk that alerts you to your order being complete via text or in-store announcement, will make for an easy shopping experience at the new location.

The store, which employs roughly 100 associates, is open 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday.
