Loft party show w/ live music from Kotoko Brass (Boston/Ghana) & Karikatura (NYC, Ropeadope Records) + West African food (fufu, light soup, groundnut soup & jollof rice). BYOB.
Kotoko Brass Bio:
Inspired by the traditional drum rhythms of Ghana, Kotoko Brass has created a unique, joyful, and improvisational style of West African dance music described by the Boston Globe as “propulsive, infectious party music”. The drums provide the heart and soul of Kotoko Brass — merging syncopated African percussion polyrhythms with hard-hitting dance grooves on the drumset. Keyboard and bass evoke classic African and Caribbean styles of highlife, afrobeat, and reggae, and horns blend traditional sounds of New Orleans with the famous West African brass band sound heard from Ghana to Nigeria. A celebratory and energetic synthesis of music, people, and cultures from around the world, Kotoko Brass features musicians from Ghana, Antigua, Japan, and the United States playing together in unity. Kotoko Brass performs at venues such as House of Blues, Strand Theater, and Yawkey Way at Fenway Park, and shares stages with notable acts such as Take 6, Rubblebucket, Vieux Farka Toure, Betsayda Machado, Flor De Toloache, and Innov Gnawa.
Karikatura is a global soul band based in New York City. Like their city, they are musically at home where genres meet and blend. Since 2010, the six-piece group has actively pursued international touring and recording, releasing three EPs and a full-length album, Eyes Wide on Ropeadope Records and regularly touring Europe, the United States, South America, and Asia. 2017 was marked by their 7th European tour and a five-country tour of Latin America through the prestigious American Music Abroad program, where they joined the historic ranks of greats including Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong as international arts ambassadors. On the heels of a successful 2017 season, Karikatura will be releasing their second full-length record Ghost Light, out April 27th on Oh So Nice Records. This record is their most honest and bold expression yet, focusing on the inner flame that keeps the band alive and striving. The release will be followed up by European and North American tours in Summer 2018.
