Even during the height of the Thirty Years’ War, music performed by excellent musicians was an important part of life at many of the German courts. The German tradition of viol consort music with lutes continued until late in the 17th century and would ultimately lead to the orchestral suites of J.S. Bach. Come hear suites and sonatas by some of the finest composers in Germany in the time before Bach, such as Rosenmueller, Hammerschmidt and Scheidt, among others. There will be lute solos by Bittner and Reusner, as well as a consort suite by Becker and Scheidt’s hauntingly beautiful “Canzon super O Nachbar Roland”.
The members of El Dorado Ensemble are all active Boston-area musicians, frequently heard in concerts and recordings throughout the region. Recent performances include an appearance at the Portland (Maine) Early Music Festival. Carol Lewis and Olav Chris Henriksen are two of America’s leading early musicians, performing frequently in recitals individually and together, as well as with internationally acclaimed ensembles including Boston Camerata, Hespèrion XXI, Capriccio Stravagante, Waverly Consort, and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.
