Music and dance were always important to the French royals, and during the reign of Louis XIV (the “Sun King”), the arts became an even more integral part of life at court. Quality music was in such favor that the public had the opportunity to appreciate the fine work of many talented composers, both male and female. There is a rich repertoire of trios from this period, and the concert will feature suites and sonatas by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Antoine Forqueray, Louis-Antoine Dornel, and Joseph Bodin de Boismortier. Mr. Henriksen will play a sonata for baroque guitar by virtuoso violinist Jean-Baptiste Senaillé, and the ensemble will conclude their program with François Couperin’s masterpiece “L’imperiale” from Les Nations.
Na’ama Lion and Peter Bloom are both well-known in the Boston area as well as internationally as versatile performers on historical flutes. Ms. Lion teaches at the Longy School of Music and directs a chamber music program at Harvard College. Mr. Bloom serves on the faculty of Snow Pond Composers Workshop. Olav Chris Henriksen and Carol Lewis, frequently heard as soloists, have also performed and recorded with many ensembles in the United States and abroad, including Boston Camerata, Ensemble Chaconne, Emmanuel Music, Capella Clausura, Capriccio Stravagante, Hespèrion and others.
