Scout Picks: Remembering The Next Big Thing

BerlinBoston rock, French jazz, and Zimbabwean folk-pop await you after the jump.

Friday

Poet Theater presents Terry Kitchen with special guest Rick Berlin
8 – 10:30 pm, $10
Center for Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave.

The Boston rock scene of the ’80s was always on the verge of blowing up in a big way, and being exposed to all that potential energy can do funny things to your head. Just ask Terry Kitchen and Rick Berlin, who were there and lived to tell about it- Kitchen even wrote a few things down in his new book called The Next Big Thing, which he’ll be reading in this evening of music and spoken word, featuring Kitchen’s old band, Loose Ties.

Saturday

Jazz at The Green Room: Alain Pacowski, solo guitar
3 – 4:30 pm, $10
The Green Room, 62 Bow St.

A fixture of the Boston and  New York jazz scenes, Pacowski originally hails from Biarritz, France, which lends his licks an inimitable cosmopolitan flair that’s not to be missed.

Sunday

Oliver Mtukudzi & the Black Spirits
7 – 9pm, $27
Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square

One of the biggest names in Afro-pop, “Tuku” as he is affectionately known, combines a voice deeper than the Marianas trench and a fingers lighters than air into a masterful blend of traditional folk music and energetic pop.
